New Learning Hub in Leyte aims to raise independent readers

Reading comprehension, or understanding and making meaning from what we read, is a vital part of a love for reading. The educators of Guinciaman Elementary School found that their learners can read aloud, recognize text, and read at a pace, but they cannot always understand what they are reading.

To supplement teaching in classroom setups, Project HINGYAP launched a reading program to support struggling readers and help them become independent. This reading program aims to make the school library an active space where its learners will dive into reading books. Activities include reading sessions with teachers and peers.

Project HINGYAP reached out to CANVAS, sharing with us their need for resources to build the Learning Hub’s book collection. A variety of our activity books were given to 205 learners. The books were theirs to take home and practice reading with, and a set of our hardbound storybooks was donated to the Learning Hub.

We thank our partners, Project HINGYAP, Guinciaman Elementary School, and Teach for the Philippines, for bringing our books into the hands of these learners. We hope that our stories become a part of theirs in their journey of falling in love with reading.
